Frank Shennan discusses freelance journalism at the AJE conference

Senior Lecturer in Journalism Frank Shennan has been speaking at the annual conference of the UK's Association for Journalism Education in London.

The theme of this year's conference, being held at the London College of Communication, was Journalism: A New World Order and papers and presentations have covered such topics as who is defining the journalism of the future, how collaboration with industry is influencing the future of journalism education, and designing the curriculum for the future.

Frank Shennan's talk was called 'Getting out from Uber - equipping students to beat the gig economy' and described the importance of teaching freelancing and entrepreneurial skills. "If journalists and journalism graduates are not to be the next Uber-style sector," he said, "they must have the necessary business as well as journalistic skills."

Among the speakers from across the country were Professor Bob Franklin of Cardiff University, founding editor of Journalism Studies, Journalism Practice and Digital Journalism, and Aidan White, Director of the global Ethical Journalism Network and former General Secretary of the International Federation of Journalists.
